Coarse, black, stout woollen, made with a long nap, used by the poorer classes in Europe for winter clothing. It is fulled so much that it is waterproof. -
6 Baize
A heavy woollen cloth made from coarse warp and weft, and felted; usually dyed green or red, has a harsh feel, is loosely woven, with a long nap on both sides, and used for coverings for tables, screens, etc., 66 to 68-in. is the general width. This term was used in 1605 to specify a woollen cloth; first made in Sandwich, Colchester and Norwich in the reign of Queen Elizabeth. At Sandwich, the Walloon strangers were workers in serges, baize and flannel, and the English weavers learnt the trade from them. -

A 2 X 2 twill cloth woven from all-cotton yarns, soft spun weft. A raised finish is given to the cloth and a long nap produced on the face. It takes the place of flannel for many purposes where cheapness is required. One quality is made 72 X 56 per inch, 32's/10's yarns. -

Chinchilla fabrics with fine coloured stripes in the warp, produced by hard-spun yarns. These hard yarns are placed at regular intervals. They are usually of cotton and are woven with the weft so as to bind it firmly into the face of the cloth. This prevents the formation of the floats necessary to produce the long nap formed into nubs during finishing (see Chinchilla) -

An olden Celtic term for a woollen wrap with a long nap, worn in severe weather as an upper garment by the poorer class of Gauls. -
20 Llama Coating
An overcoating cloth made with llama wool face. It is finished with a long nap which is rippled on a special machine. One quality is made 72-in. (loom) 52 ends and 70 picks per inch, warp 4 run, face weft 21/2 run and back weft 4 run woollen yarns. Usually the yarns are dyed browns, red and greens. The back weft is generally shoddy. In the weave given strokes represent face weft and full squares back weft on 8 shafts. This cloth very often has a velour finished back.
